Coast Guard Suspends Search for Missing Cuban Migrant Off Key West Coast

Search efforts for a Cuban migrant who was reported missing off the coast of Key West were suspended Wednesday.

According to a release, a group of 11 Cuban migrants landed safely on Main Key, but claimed that two other men in their group were last seen swimming towards Key West.

Helicopter crews managed to locate and rescue one of the men off of Crawfish Key, but were unable to locate the second.

Since Oct. 1, the Coast Guard estimates that 2,065 Cubans have attempted to illegally migrate to the U.S. by sea.

"The Coast Guard continues to strongly discourage attempts to illegally enter the country by taking to the sea," said USCG Captain Mark Fedor in a release. "These trips are extremely dangerous and could lead to loss of life."
