Fire Official Feels Heat in Mortgage Fraud Case

Veteran Fire Rescue Captain was arrest by feds but at least his boss said he was a good employee

The heat's on a Miami Fire official who was arrested by the Feds for mortgage fraud charges connected to a drug trafficking ring, according to authorities.

Gamaliel N. Souffrant, a Fire Rescue Captain surrendered to FBI and IRS agents on Monday after a nice vacation. Talk about a rude return.

Souffrant, a 19-year veteran of Fire Rescue, is being charged in connection with the alleged fraud and drug scheme along with his wife and his brother, Garry Souffrant, a minister who works with the Boca Raton Fire Rescue.

Fire Rescue Lt. Ignatius E. Carroll Jr. refused to comment about the case because the department had not seen the charges.

"It has nothing to do with his position as a fire captain," Carroll told the Miami Herald.

The group made their first appearance in federal court Monday.
