Florida Gov. Rick Scott Vetoes ‘Toilet to Tap' Bill

Florida Gov. Rick Scott is siding with environmentalists by vetoing a bill that would have allowed treated wastewater to be pumped back into the state's groundwater.

Scott vetoed the bill Friday while signing 17 others. He said Florida has stringent water quality standards, and "we're going to keep it that way."

Several environmental groups have been calling for a veto. The Clean Water Network of Florida has used the slogan "Toilet to tap — let's flush it" and threatened to start calling Scott "Governor Poopy Water" if he signed the legislation.

Proponents of the bill said that treated water injected into aquifers would have met federal drinking water standards and would have helped sustain water resources and supplies.
