Man Accused in 1978 Chicago Killing Arrested in Florida

Authorities say a Florida man living under a false name faces charges of killing his girlfriend in Chicago 37 years ago.

The Martin County Sheriff's Office reports that 57-year-old Alvaro Flores was arrested Tuesday by detectives from the sheriff's office and the Chicago Police Department.

Authorities say Flores fatally stabbed 26-year-old Maria Verela in 1978. He has been living in Florida for years under the name Aiden Garcia. He is married with three children.

Officials first learned of Flores' new name and home in 2000, when a fingerprint check for a gun permit alerted the FBI. Flores was arrested but soon released. Chicago prosecutors have been collecting more evidence since.

Flores is being held without bond until he can be extradited to Chicago. Jail records didn't list an attorney.
