Man Set Girlfriend On Fire: Cops

Miami-Dade Police search for man accused in brutal attack

Miami-Dade Police are searching for a man they say set his girlfriend on fire during a brutal attack inside their mobile home Wednesday night.

The incident happened just after 6 p.m. at the home in the 2200 block of Northwest 27th Ave.

Police say 41-year-old Jesus Alvarez began to hit girlfriend Margarita Blanco with his fists before he set her on fire.

"He then went inside the trailer, dragged her out by her hair and began to douse her with fuel, we believe it's gasoline, right in the middle of the street, in front of her mother," said Miami-Dade Detective Roy Rutland. "That is the point that he used some sort of accelerant and lit her on fire."

Blanco, 41, was rushed to Jackson Memorial Hospital where she's listed in critical condition.

Police describe Alvarez as a career criminal with over a dozen arrests and several stints in prison. They say he should be considered armed and dangerous.

A friend of Blanco said it's not the first time Alvarez has been physically violent.

"It's not the first time that he has hit her, he has went to jail several times for it, and she has pressed charges but they keep on getting back together, because she keeps believing him that he's changed and everything," said the woman, who didn't want her name used. "But this time, he just burned her."

Police are asking anyone with information on Alvarez's whereabouts to call Miami-Dade CrimeStoppers at 305-471-TIPS.
