The man who pleaded guilty to fatally shooting a Brinks armored truck guard was sentenced Friday to life in prison plus 20 years, according to the Department of Justice.
Nathaniel Moss, now 33, fatally shot Alejandro Nodarse Arencibia in Oct. 2010. Moss has been providing authorities with information that has lead to other arrests, according to a criminal complaint.
"I take full responsibility and I know that I deserve way worse than this," Moss was quoted by the South Florida Sun Sentinel as saying in court on Friday.
Judge James Cohn approved the plea agreement, and sentenced him to life in prison for the shooting and 20 years for robbery charges, the newspaper said.
Moss also asked Cohn if he could marry his girlfriend while in prison, according to the South Florida Sun Sentinel.
Moss was ordered to pay $35,235 to the insurance company of Arencibia, the newspaper reported.
"He really feels very bad in retrospect and wishes he could go back in time and change what happened," his attorney William Matthewman was quoted as saying by the newspaper.
The shooting and robbery occurred on Oct. 1, 2010 in broad daylight outside the Bank of America at 7950 Miramar Parkway. Police said Moss held Arencibia at gunpoint and then shot him, while an accomplice took the bag of money.
According to the criminal complaint, a Brinks courier bag containing $395,000 was recovered inside a vehicle and $2,500 was found outside the bank at the shooting scene. An orange traffic safety vest was discovered near Moss, the criminal complaint said. The messenger had been delivering $397,500 to the bank.
Federal documents said that the robbery was planned for some time.
Four other arrests related to the crime include: Terrance Brown, 38, Toriano Johnson, 34, Daryl Davis, 45, and Hasam Williams, 35.
