A Miami-Dade Police detective was grazed by a bullet Tuesday night in Hialeah during a shootout with a suspect who was killed in another confrontation with officers, officials said.
The shooting occurred just before 11 p.m. around the area of West 2nd Avenue and 65th Street.
According to MDPD, detectives were conducting an investigation into a domestic abduction when they found the suspect's vehicle they were looking for. That suspect, who family members identified as 53-year-old Leonardo Cano, refused to stop and a pursuit ensued.
After crashing his car at the scene, Cano reportedly stepped out of the car with an assault rifle and opened fire before fleeing the scene.
One detective, a 32-year-old unnamed member of the department, was grazed by a bullet and rushed to Ryder Trauma Center, where he was treated and released.
Multiple agencies responded to a perimeter set up, with Cano eventually being found before being fatally shot by officers.
The Florida Department of Law Enforecement has taken over the investigation into the shooting.
Cano has a lenghty criminal record dating back over two decades, charged with crimes ranging from battery to burglary and grand theft.
