A woman was found murdered in a Miami-Dade home and an officer shot and killed a man armed with a knife during what police believe was a domestic violence incident involving a husband and wife Wednesday morning.

The incident began when police received a call from the home in the gated Caribe Lakes community near Southwest 32nd Street and 157th Avenue shortly after 7 a.m., Miami-Dade Police Director Juan Perez said.

Perez said the first officer who arrived found the woman dead inside the home in what he described as a "horrific scene." The officer quickly encountered the man with the knife and the officer opened fire and killed the man, Perez said.

Perez called it "a domestic incident that resulted in tragedy." He said the woman's adult child and a teen were found unharmed in the home.

"The officer potentially saved some lives today, unfortunately had to take someone's life in the process," Perez said. "We believe this is a husband and wife situation, the wife is dead on the scene as well from extreme trauma to the body."

The woman was later identified as 49-year-old Marays Morejon, and the man as 51-year-old Reinaldo Gonzalez.

The officer involved, whose name was not released, was evaluated by paramedics at a nearby scene but was not hurt, according to Perez. He is a 17-year veteran of the department.

Perez said police were trying to connect the children with other family members.

"They are traumatized, obviously, by what they had to undergo this morning," Perez said.

The Florida Department of Law Enforcement is investigating the shooting, and Miami-Dade Police are investigating the woman's murder.
