FAA Investigating Fatal Plane Crash at Site of Stuart Air Show

It is unclear whether the aircraft is responsible for the cloud of smoke seen outside of the air field

Martin County Sheriff's Office has confirmed a person died after a plane crash at the Stuart Air Show Friday afternoon.

The crash happened at Witham Field, where the air show was scheduled to begin Friday.

The Federal Aviation Administration said only the pilot was on-board the Grunman OV-1 Mohawk, which crashed as it approached the end of the runway.

Martin County Sheriff William Snyder said fire-rescue responded to the scene of the plane crash.

"Fire Rescue personnel were already on the scene and had extinguished the flames which, by all appearances, had fully engulfed the airplane," Sheriff Snyder told reporters at a news conference Friday afternoon.

In a tweet, the Audi Stuart Air show released the following statement:

"We’ve had an incident involving one of our aircraft. All local and federal agencies are on site and investigating so that we may ensure the safety of our airshow before we continue."

The Federal Aviation Administration and the National Transportation Safety Board are currently investigating.
