South Florida Named Number One Area in State for Car Thefts

For car theives across South Florida, the third time’s the charm when it comes to a dubious ranking.

A report named the area as the number one part of the state for car thefts, for the third consecutive year.

The National Insurance Crime Bureau reported over 20,000 car thefts among Miami, Broward and Palm Beach counties. This is a slight decrease from the year prior, but still enough to land South Florida among the top.

Nationally, car theft cases have decreased by 53% since 1991, according to the report.

Auto insurance company State Farm released tips to protect your car from theft that include the following: 

  • Roll up the windows
  • Don't keep a spare key in the car
  • Hide valuables out of sight
  • Consider a vehicle recovery system, to track your car using GPS
  • Park in populated areas

The tri-county area ranked 72 out of the 383 metro areas with the most reported thefts. Los Angeles was ranked as the top area in the nation for car thefts, while Kahului-Wailuku, Hawaii reported no thefts.
