South Miami Commissioner Jay Beckman died Easter Sunday after his teenage son shot him at his SW 65th Street home.
Beckman’s 17-year-old son, Jason, contacted authorities after the shooting. He told police he was showing his father a gun when he slipped and fell, causing the gun to go off. Jason was charged with manslaughter Sunday evening.
The Miami Herald is reporting the community is already feeling the loss of the commissioner. South Miami Mayor Horace Feliu told the paper, “`I'm hoping that it was an accident. In any event, the city has suffered a big loss with the death of Commissioner Beckman.''
