D-Wade Not Surprised By UM Scandal

Wade calls NCAA investigation "unfortunate"

Dwyane Wade may not be a Hurricane, but he is not shocked by the storm clouds that are hovering over the University of Miami.

At his fantasy basketball camp Friday, the Miami Heat star said he wasn't surprised about recent allegations that UM booster, avid Heat fan and convicted felon Nevin Shapiro gave improper benefits to 72 current and former football players at the U.

"This is the United States of America," Wade said with a wry smile. "Ain't nothing surprising."

It's unclear how well Wade knows Shapiro, though he is said to have taken several rides on Shapiro's yacht and video shot in 2006 shows Shapiro was the first person to greet Wade when he came off the court after a victory over the Detroit Pistons at the AmericanAirlines Arena.

That was the game Wade brought Miami back by scoring 17 straight points.

Shapiro, who was sitting courtside, jumped out of his seat and ran on the court to give Wade a high five, the video shows.

In April, Shapiro was sentenced to 20 years in prison for organizing a $930 million Ponzi scheme. He first made his allegations about UM while federal authorities were investigating the fraud, Shapiro's attorney said.

Wade has not been implicated in any wrongdoing.

Wade said Friday he was a UM supporter and called the current NCAA investigation into player payouts "unfortunate."

"I wish the best for Miami," he said, "but it's very unfortunate."
