29 Slain in Guatemala's “Worst Massacre” In Years

Twenty-nine mostly decapitated bodies were found on a ranch near the Guatemala border with Mexico. "This is the worst massacre we have seen in modern times," police spokesman Donal Gonzalez told Reuters, adding the last mass murder of this scale in Guatemala was when its 36-year civil war ended in 1998. Police said they believe the killings were caused by two drug gangs fighting for control of the area, an active transfer point for cocaine, and they are investigating the Zetas gang. The massacre may also be linked to the murder of the ranch's owner, who was killed in the same area Saturday. The BBC reported the bodies showed signs of torture.
