U.S. Navy Ship the Lewis and Clark was chased Wednesday morning by two pirate ships who fired small arms weapons at the American boat, Reuters reported.
The pirate ships didn't get closer than one nautical mile to the Navy vessel, which sped up to flee the pirates.

The Lewis and Clark was once a temporary detention facility for pirates arrested at sea, but has since been used to deliver supplies to American ships in the area.
There have been nearly 100 attacks on ships in the Somali coast in 2009, and 27 have been successful, the Navy said.
