Veteran Democratic Congressman to Retire

Norm Dicks, an 18-term Democratic congressman from Washington announced Friday that he would not run for another term. Just hours after his announcement, The Hill reported that other congressmen and women were already racing to replace him as the party's ranking member on the House Appropriations Committee, which controls government spending. Rep. Marcy Kaptur (D-Ohio), Rep. Nita Lowey (D-N.Y.) and Rep. Jim Moran (D-Va.) have all indicated they are considering running for the position. His seat in Congress, meanwhile, is expected to go to another Democrat, though his retirement may inspire Republicans to step up their challenge, NBC's First Read blog reported.
