Brandon Knight Wins Player of the Year — Again

Knight was surprised in class by Alonzo Mourning and a giant trophy.

There isn't a high school senior in South Florida that doesn't beg for interruptions in class, but even the most daydreamy scenarios don't usually involve Alonzo Mourning.

But then, most high schools don't have a Brandon Knight, either. The 6'3" senior superstar point guard was in class at Pine Crest High this morning when Mourning surprised him -- and everyone else -- with Knight's second National Gatorade Boys' Basketball Player of the Year trophy.

"I thought we were taking a test during second period, but suddenly we had a guest lecturer, and cameras were taping it," Knight said. "I thought the cameras were taping a promotional piece for the school and Alonzo was a guest lecturer."

But when Mourning began to speak about basketball and the attributes of great play, Knight realized what was up: he was joining LeBron James and Greg Oden as the only players who have won the award twice in a row.

If that means he'll continue to be unstoppable or shortly crumple to the ground on papier-mâché knees, we're taking the former. Knight leaves high school as Broward County's all-time leading scorer with 3,515 career points, having averaged 31.9 points per game as a senior. He led Pine Crest to two state championships and on appearance, and has already been invited to play in the McDonald's All-America Game, the Nike Hoop Summit and the Jordan Brand Classic.

Oh, and he's also the nation's number one high school recruit, and sports a 4.3 GPA with 21 college credit hours.

"He's a terrific player, but really a more outstanding young man," Bruce Weber, the award's founder, told ESPN. "Think of it: We've had Hall of Fame players, All-Americans and all-stars in the program, but so few multiple winners of the national award. It takes a special person to do it."

We'll say. Knight is expected to choose between Syracuse, Kentucky, Connecticut, Florida and Kansas in April.
