SoFla Baseball Grabs Glory, Takes a Dive

Season titles, county records, ACC accolades, and post-win full-gear pool parties. Welcome to South Florida baseball.

We don't know how to put this, but we're kind of a big deal right now. At least in baseball.

From Westminster Christian sophomore David Thompson, who is finishing up the single-greatest season at the plate in Dade County history, to Miami's ACC Player of the Year Yasmani Grandal, to FIU's streaking Garret Wittels and FAU's first regular season conference championship, South Florida is sluggin' it up right now - and diving right in.

We'd expect nothing less from the hams that brought America its best-ever two-hour rain delay theatre, but that's FAU for you. Just minutes after notching their first Sun Belt regular season title over the weekend, the Owls hit the pools behind the baseball complex and threw an impromptu diving party -- uniforms and all.

Even head coach John MacCormack got into it, though his attempt at catching air may as well have been executed by a tree.

(If you enjoy watching people stomach-plant off a high-dive -- and who doesn't? -- head to the 30-second mark. You're welcome!)

But around the horn, other area teams had reasons to celebrate as well. The high school ranks are in awe over Thompson's record 19 homers so far this season, especially since two of them came in one inning of yesterday's state semi-finals -- the first of which sparked a 9-run fourth inning that brought Westminster back from a 4-0 deficit.

The sophomore shortstop will get a chance to add on to his record this afternoon in the state championship against St. Pete's Shorecrest Prep.

And over in Coral Gables, the no. 9 Canes' catcher Yasmani Grandal is celebrating yesterday's ACC Player of the Year Award, though, as far as we know, sadly without either a high dive or a video camera.

Then there's Wittels, who's got a shot at taking down a 23-year-old NCAA hit record as the postseason unfolds.

And as for those Owls? They next head to the Sun Belt's conference tournament, where they face old rain delay dance-off foes Western Kentucky on Wednesday. There probably won't be rain or pools, and we can't wait to see how they make up for it.
