Bill Clinton Endorses Miami Beach Mayoral Candidate Philip Levine

Former President Bill Clinton endorsed Levine during a visit to Miami Beach.

Former President Bill Clinton endorsed one of the candidates running for mayor of Miami Beach during his visit to South Florida Monday.

Clinton made his endorsement of Philip Levine public at a luncheon in Miami, the candidate said in a statement.

"I would be for Philip if we weren't friends, because he puts a premium on cooperation across party lines," Clinton said, according to the statement. "America is being damaged by conflict, and we need people who will show up for work everyday. Philip will show up to work and get things done."

Levine is actively involved with the Clinton Global Initiative, a part of the former president’s non-profit foundation.

"To say that I am honored to receive President Clinton's endorsement of my candidacy is an understatement. The correct adjectives are difficult to express, but this is a serious matter and I intend to be a Mayor that the residents will be proud of, as well as my friend President Clinton," Levine said.

Levine is running against Michael Góngora, a member of the Miami Beach City commission and Steve Berke, an entertainer.

Elections will be held on Nov. 5.
