BILL TO BAN USE OF FOREIGN LAWS STALLS
Florida senators have dealt a setback to a bill that would ban Shariah, or Islamic law, and other foreign laws from being applied in state courts. An attempt to have the Senate take up the House version came up one vote short of the support needed on Thursday, the next-to-last day of the Legislature's 60-day session.
UNIVERSAL ANNOUNCES OPENING OF TRANSFORMERS RIDE
Universal Orlando says its new, 3-D theme park ride based on the Transformers toy and film brand will open June 20. According to a news release, the ride is an interactive, "larger than life battle" between the Autobots and Decepticons.
BURGLARS STRIKE HOME OF MIAMI HEAT'S HASLEM
The home of Miami Heat forward Udonis Haslem was apparently burglarized. But authorities don't know if anything was taken. Police say someone broke in on April 13, by prying open a side garage door. Closets were ransacked and alarm boxes were ripped off the walls. But arriving deputies likely scared the suspects.
FUTURE OF ST. PETERSBURG'S PIER IN LIMBO
St. Petersburg's City Council has postponed a crucial vote on the future of the city's pier. A decision whether to pay $1.5 million to an architect for the next design phase of a proposed pier replacement was scheduled Thursday. But the Council delayed the vote for two weeks to give members more time to review a 400-page report from the architects.
HIGH COURT: CELL PHONE SEARCHES UNCONSTITUTIONAL
The Florida Supreme Court ruled that a warrantless police search of an arrested person's cell phone is unconstitutional. The court ruled 7-2 on Thursday in the case out of Jacksonville.
PILOT RACES CAR AGAINST JET
South Florida resident and world-record pilot Barrington Irving will a race a Factory Five GTM super car against a Learjet at approximately 200 miles per hour on a runway at Opa-locka Executive Airport Friday. The super-car was built over the last year by 30 inner-city students ages eight to 18 from Irving’s non-profit learning center Experience Aviation.
