Ex-State Senator Faces Tax Evasion Charges

Former state Sen. Mandy Dawson was arrested on Wednesday

Former state Sen. Mandy Dawson is facing federal tax evasion charges as part of a corruption investigation into a prominent South Florida eye doctor.

Federal prosecutors say the 54-year-old Dawson evaded thousands of dollars in taxes in 2004 and 2005. She's also charged with failing to file tax returns in three other years. All told she
could get a maximum of 13 years in prison if convicted.

The former Broward County Democratic lawmaker was arrested Wednesday at her current home near Daytona Beach. Court records did not list an attorney for her.

Through an aide, Dawson was paid about $82,000 for legislative support by Dr. Alan Mendelsohn. He pleaded guilty last year to filing false tax returns, lying to FBI agents and using some $700,000 in contributors' money for himself.
