FAMU Drum Major Dies After Becoming Unresponsive in Parked Bus: Officials

Robert Champion vomited and complained of not being able to breathe, officials said

A drum major for the Florida Agricultural and Mechanical University band died after becoming unresponsive in a bus parked in the lot of an Orlando hotel, authorities said.

Robert Champion, 26, returned with the band on Saturday night to the Rosen Plaza Hotel, the Orange County Sheriff's Office said.

He vomited in the parking lot and complained of not being able to breathe, and his friends called 911 and administered CPR, authorities said.

Champion was pronounced dead at Doctor Phillips Hospital, the sheriff's office said.

According to NBC affiliate WESH, the band was on a trip to the Florida Classic game.

Authorities said there was no sign of foul play right now. The investigation continues.

Champion's mother was contacted by university officials and told of the death.
