Man Stole Dead Woman's Ashes, Said He'd Snort Them: Police

Grand theft charges for man who police say stole ashes, told dead woman's mother he'd snort them

A Florida man is facing a grand theft charge after he stole a woman's ashes and told her mother he was going to snort them, police said.

Joseph W. Pointer, 51, of Lakeland, was arrested Thursday, accused of stealing the ashes of Melissa Williamson, who died in a 2008 car crash, according to an arrest report obtained by the Lakeland Ledger.

According to the report, Pointer had briefly lived with Williamson's sister, Angela Speakman, in April.

Speakman told police she thinks Pointer stole the ashes, which she shares with her parents, the report said.

Pointer was spotted driving past Speakman's mother's home Wednesday, where he announced his intentions for the ashes, the report said.

"I've got your dead daughter's ashes and I'm going to snort them," Pointer shouted, according to the report.

Pointer was later arrested and booked into Polk County jail and was ordered held on $1,000 bond. It was unknown whether he has an attorney.
