Swimmer Pulled From Miami Beach Waters Dies

Man caught up in dangerous rip currents dies in Miami Beach

A man who was swimming in Miami Beach died after he had to be pulled from the water by rescue swimmers Sunday night, police said.

The man, 56-year-old George A. Knott, from California, was swimming in the waters near 77th Street with a woman when he became distressed, according to a Miami Beach Police report.

Miami Beach Police spokeswoman Det. Vivian Hernandez said Miami Beach Police and Fire Rescue responded and a rescue swimmer pulled Knott out.

According to the report, it took 25 minutes to find Knott, who was found floating unresponsive.

Knott was rushed to Mount Sinai Medical Center where he later died, Hernandez said.

Hernandez said a dangerous rip current may have been a factor in the death.

The woman who was swimming with Knott told police that they had been working out and went into the ocean to cool down when Knott began struggling to stay afloat due to the heavy waves and strong current, the report said.
