Taco, a sub-adult loggerhead sea turtle that was rescued on May 5, will be released back into the ocean Friday.
The Turtle Hospital will open the release to the public, which will take place on the beach behind Cheeca Lodge in Islamorada.
“If I hadn’t been educated by the Turtle Hospital, I would not have known what to look for,” said Kimberly Spiegel, who found the struggling turtle. “Taco’s flipper was out of the water, she was swimming sideways and she could only dive down a couple feet before coming up again.”
Taco was treated in for an intestinal infection and was put on a healthy diet. The hospital gave the turtle squid, fish, antibiotics, beano and vitamins.
The turtle is now completely recovered and ready to return to the ocean. The public release will begin at 9:30 a.m. and everyone is welcome.
