Fundraiser to Benefit Burned Boy Tonight

Restaurant hopes to raise money for 15-year-old Michael Brewer

One South Florida restaurant is ready to give a big lift to the family of the teen who remains in intensive care after he was set on fire in a gruesome attack earlier this month.

Galuppi's of Pompano Beach will he holding a fundraiser tonight for 15-year-old Michael Brewer, who has burns on over 65 percent of his body after a group of teens poured rubbing alcohol on him and set him on fire on Oct. 12.

"Obviously it's horrific," Grant Galuppi, co-owner of the restaurant, said of the attack. "We're hoping to raise a good amount of money for the family."

Starting at 5 p.m. tonight, the restaurant, located at 1103 North Federal Highway, will be holding a fundraiser in support of the Brewer family. All bar proceeds from the night will go the Brewers, and donations will be accepted all night.

Bartenders will be donating a portion of their tips, and there will be rafflesand a DJ.

Galuppi said he can't believe the outpouring he's already received from the community.

"I've been overwhelmed with all the people calling and dropping off checks, it's gonna be a great event," Galuppi said. "The buzz over the past week has been very positive."

Galuppi said he was motivated to hold the fundraiser after talking with a friend of his who was one of the first responders at the scene of the horrible fire. He said the restaurant is expecting at least 200-330 people and hopes to raise between $5,000-$10,000 dollars for the Brewer family.

Last week, Brewer underwent skin graft surgery on his limbs and torso. Doctors said it was likely the first of many surgeries and that it will take weeks and possibly months before Brewer will be able to leave the hospital.
