Legislators to Seminoles: No Dice

Seminoles say they are entitled to have black jack games

A gambling deal between the Seminole Indians and Gov. Charlie Crist may be going bust.

A special House committee has rejected Crist's new agreement with the Seminole Tribe to expand gambling at their Florida casinos.

The panel voted unanimously to turn down the proposal Thursday. It would have allowed blackjack and other banked card games at all seven casinos, including the flagship Seminole Hard Rock in Hollywood, instead of just four as outlined in legislation passed last year.

Seminole officials recently claimed that because other parimutuels were allowed to have video black jack games, their casinos were entitled to have the real thing. Several Indian casinos have already installed black jack tables and have been playing for a couple of years, despite allegations from some legislators that it's against the law.

The Florida Supreme Court struck down a deal Crist originally negotiated with the Seminoles because it lacked the Legislature's approval.

Lawmakers then passed the guidelines for renewed negotiations between Crist and the tribe, but any subsequent deal they sign must go back to the Legislature for confirmation.
