A pilot has died after his small plane crashed into the Florida Everglades last night, authorities said.

The single-engine plane left Kendall-Tamiami Executive Airport shortly after 6 p.m., heading north to Ocala.

Broward Sheriff's Office dispatchers received calls around 6:45 p.m. from drivers on I-75 that a plane was flying too low. Some callers said it seemed to have disappeared into the swamp.

The plane is registered to Edmundo Velazquez, 49, of Oviedo and he is feared to be the person that was flying the plane. Authorities recovered a body among the wreckage Monday afternoon, but would not confirm that it was Velazquez.

The Sun-Sentinel is reporting that a woman at Velazquez's home said she was his wife and that he was flying the plane.

Fire Rescue workers and Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission officers found the plane a short time later, 200 yards north of I-75 near mile marker 41.

No survivors were found, and Federal Aviation Authorities said the pilot, whose identity wasn't released, died in the crash. BSO will continue its investigation of the crash site today.
