BSO Deputy Arrested on Battery, Misconduct

Gerald Wengert was jailed and charged with battery, falsifying records and official misconduct

A deputy with the Broward Sheriff's Office was arrested and charged with battery, falsifying records and official misconduct Saturday.

Gerald Wengert, 33, of Cooper City, was suspended without pay and booked at the Broward County Jail on $2,000 bond, a release said. He was released overnight.

According to the BSO, an investigation found that Wengert acted inappropriately in December 2010 when he arrested 17-year-old Mark Visconti on charges of resisting arrest and battery on a law enforcement agent.

Wengert also appeared on TLC's show "Unleashed: K9 Broward County."

"When we get a complaint, or there is some sign of wrongdoing, we investigate and take action if policies were violated or laws were broken,” Sheriff Al Lamberti said in a release.

“It bothers me that we have nearly 6,000 dedicated employees doing the right thing every day and people hear more about the mistakes and misdeeds of a few. But regardless of the effect, we are not going to sweep anything under the rug," he said.

It was not immediately known if Wengert had an attorney.
