BSO Deputy Faces Charges in Off-Duty Shooting

A Broward Sheriff's deputy was behind bars Monday after he turned himself in in connection with a shooting that injured a Hollywood man last year.

Kevin Patrick McClernon, 51, is facing charges of aggravated battery with a deadly weapon, using a firearm under the influence of alcohol and negligence, jail records showed.

He was being held on $52,000 bond, but that amount has been reduced to $11,000, according to his attorney.

BSO officials said McClernon was off-duty but in uniform and partying with a woman in her apartment when her boyfriend walked in. The boyfriend said he confronted the deputy and that's when McClernon shot him, officials said.

“I’m pleased this case went to the grand jury, and I respect the grand jury’s decision to file a true bill in this matter. Clearly, McClernon was not acting in a law enforcement capacity when he fired his gun. His behavior was criminal," Sheriff Scott Israel said in a statement. "While the majority of law enforcement officers uphold their oath of office with honor, there must be consequences for those who break the law.”
