Baby Taken to Ryder Trauma Center After Being Hit in Eye Area With BB Gun Pellet in Hialeah: Cops

A projectile from the gun ricocheted off a wall and hit her inside her home, police said

A 3-month-old baby is in the hospital after Hialeah Police said she was accidentally shot in the eye area by a BB gun inside her home Thursday afternoon.

The father was placing his gun down not far from her inside their Hialeah home when it somehow fired, with a BB ricocheting off the wall and hitting the girl, police said.

The parents dialed 911, racing from their home in Hialeah's Lago Grande apartment complex to Palmetto General Hospital. Their baby was later airlifted to Jackson Memorial Hospital's Ryder Trauma Center.

She is expected to recover, police said.

Police initially said that the child's parents were walking around Lago Grande on the 6700 block of West 27th Court Thursday afternoon when an unknown substance struck the infant.

As the baby was airlifted, Hialeah Police kept the parents back.

"We have the parents with us, we're talking the parents now. We're interviewing them, we're asking them exactly what happened to the baby," Officer Eddy Hernandez said at that point.

The close call was later deemed an accident, and the parents joined their child's side at Jackson.

No charges are expected against the parents.
