Deerfield Beach Suspect Arrested After Shooting Man Angry at Him Over Cigarettes: BSO

Roderick Ferguson, 25, faces a charge of first-degree murder

A 25-year-old Deerfield Beach man has been arrested after he fatally shot another man Wednesday in a dispute that began over cigarettes, the Broward Sheriff’s Office said.

Detectives arrested Roderick Ferguson on a charge of first-degree murder just after 12:30 a.m. Thursday, the BSO said.

Glenn Thervil, 30, of Deerfield Beach became angry Wednesday afternoon when Ferguson wouldn’t give him cigarettes as they and others hung out in Mayo Howard Park, according to the BSO. Thervil pulled out a gun and threatened Ferguson with it, before leaving the park with two acquaintances who admonished him for pointing the weapon at Ferguson and told Thervil to stay home, according to the BSO.

But Thervil returned later and had another confrontation with Ferguson, who shot him a little after 4 p.m., the BSO said.

Thervil died in the street on SW 11th Way while Ferguson and others ran away. Deputies found Thervil with a shotgun wound in his chest and a .32-caliber handgun still in his waistband, the BSO said.
