The Miami Dolphins and Cameron Wake agreed to a two-year extension worth $15 million on Saturday.
Wake was set to earn $8.275 million this season before agreeing to the new deal. 2016 would have been the final year of Wake's contract, which will now instead run through the 2017 season. By extending Wake, Miami will be able to reduce his cap charge.
The new deal is worth $15 million and could go as high as $17 million. Of that, $10 million is guaranteed which is the highest guarantee ever given to a defensive end of Wake's age. The veteran is 34-years old and is coming off an injury plagued season.
Wake tore his Achilles tendon last season and ended up playing in only seven games. Before the injury, Wake showed he had plenty left in the tank with seven sacks. That likely helped Miami make this contract decision, despite Wake's age.
“We are pleased that we were able to reach an extension with Cam,” said Executive Vice President of Football Operations Mike Tannenbaum. “He sets the right example both on and off the field, working his way up from an undrafted college free agent to a four-time Pro Bowl selection. We are excited how he will fit in this new defense and continue to be a key contributor.”
Wake will be joined by multiple new names on defense including fellow defensive end, Mario Williams. Wake began his Dolphins career in 2009 and Miami has not seen the playoffs since 2008. The hope for Miami is a stronger defense could lead to a more reliable offense and end that drought.
