Former Hurricanes Head Coach Butch Davis Headed to FIU

Former UM head coach Butch Davis will be taking over the FIU football program

The Florida International University Panthers will hire former Miami Hurricanes head coach Butch Davis on Tuesday.

The school confirmed the hiring to NBC 6 Monday and said a press conference will be held Tuesday. It will be formally announced as a five-year deal, according to a report by ESPN.

Davis led Miami from 1995-2000 and had a successful 51-20 record overall. The 64-year old also made stops at North Carolina and in the NFL with the Cleveland Browns. Recently, the veteran coach has been working in television for ESPN and will immediately leave that broadcasting gig.

FIU is in the middle of a transition after firing head coach Ron Turner on September 25th. At the time of Turner's dismissal, the Panthers had sputtered out of the gate with an 0-4 record. FIU overall is 16-40 in the last 56 games and is in need of a change.

Davis brings with him experience and also a well-known and established name. The hiring should help the Panthers in recruitment going forward. While Davis' work may not show immediately, it should become evident during his five-year run.

FIU has lost three games in a row and will next play on Saturday against Marshall.
