Four employees of a Southwest Ranches Lowe’s were arrested after authorities said they stole $70,000 worth of merchandise in shopping carts.

Willie Bartherlermy, 24, Lucas Gonzales, 19, Edgardo Gutierrez, 24, and Julien Elie, 22, were arrested last week and face charges including grand theft and dealing in stolen property. The Broward Sheriff’s Office said 20-year-old Fabien Tassy remains at large.

Deputies carried out a three-month investigation after they were notified of the alleged crime by the store’s loss prevention personnel.

Authorities said floor employees Gutierrez and Elie took filled carts to the other three defendants who then pretended to scan the items. BSO said they usually only scanned soft drinks or other inexpensive items.

The five defendants later sold the stolen merchandise online or to people they knew, according to BSO. The $70,000 worth of items included power tools, electrical equipment and lawn and garden products.
