Layoffs Expected in Broward Schools

Security guards and clerical staff could be the first to go, a union representative said

The Broward County School District is set to announce layoffs Friday and security guards may be the first to go, according to the Sun Sentinel.

The district will release a list of employees that will be laid off due to budget cuts, Daniel Reynolds, a Broward union chief that represents employees across the county, told the Sentinel. He said security guards, clerical staff and campus monitors are expected to be let go.

Broward County Superintendent Robert Runcie, though, told the Sentinel layoffs will not specifically target security guards or clerical staff. He said administrators have told schools to focus on hiring teachers while keeping their budgets balanced, which may cause cuts in other areas.

Runcie was not immediately available for comment Friday.
