Chefs helped collect food and money to feed needy children in South Florida

    Feeding South Florida has raised thousands of dollars to feed South local children with an assist from some dedicated local chefs. (Published Thursday, May 19, 2011)

    South Florida chefs came out Thursday to show they loved something more than food: feeding hungry children.

    With the help of dozens of food professionals, Feeding South Florida collected thousands of pounds of food for more than a half of a million children in Miami and Fort Lauderdale.

    On Thursday, food vendors set up shop in the parking lot of Feeding South Florida's Pembroke Park offices and celebrated by selling food to raise even more money for the cause.

    Feeding South Florida is an organization dedicated to collecting food donations for the hungry.

    It's an issue close to the heart of Lester Rodriguez, an employee at Clarabelle's Cupcakes in Miami.

    "I've traveled overseas and I've seen what communities require," he said.

    Besides raising money by selling food at the event, the organization also collected thousands of pounds of food, which won't go to waste.

    One in four Florida children do not know where their next meal will come from, Feeding South Florida officials estimate.

    Conquering that problem inspired Allen Susser, the owner and chef at Chef Allen's in Aventura..

    "We need to take care of our future generation," he said.

    Many chefs said they were dedicated to that goal, even if it meant doing it one cupcake, one box of food, and one warehouse at a time.
