A man who struck a firefighter in the face during a medical call barricaded himself inside his Fort Lauderdale apartment Thursday morning, police said.

The incident happened after firefighters responded to a medical call in the 1400 block of Northwest 21st Street, Fort Lauderdale Police spokeswoman DeAnna Greenlaw said.

While firefighters were attending to the man's medical needs, he struck one of them and retreated back into his apartment, Greenlaw said.

Officers and negotiators responded to the scene. The man was later taken into custody without incident.

No other information was immediately known.
