Man Raped Male Near Deerfield Beach Homeless Camp: BSO

A South Florida man was arrested after authorities said he raped another male near a homeless camp.

Donald Vannatter, 45, is facing a charge of sexual assault of a victim over 12 following his arrest Saturday.

Vannatter was ordered held on $500,000 bond at a court hearing Monday. It was unknown if he has an attorney.

According to a Broward Sheriff's Office arrest report, Vannatter and the victim were hanging out drinking by a homeless camp near 101 W. Sample Road in Deerfield Beach when Vannatter invited the victim to another location to get another beer.

Vannatter led him to a secluded wooded area near I-95 where he grabbed him by the neck and ordered him to remove his clothes, the report said. The victim complied and was sexually assaulted, the report said.

Vannatter threatened to kill the victim if he told anyone, the report said. The victim, whose age wasn't released, later went to a nearby hospital to be examined.

Authorities found Vannatter at the homeless camp and he was taken into custody. He admitted that they had sex but said it was consensual, the report said.

Vannatter admitted that the victim was intoxicated and had fallen a couple times on the way to the second location, the report said.

A records check showed Vannatter had been convicted in Illinois for sexual battery and is listed as a violent sexual predator.
