Miami-Dade Art Thief Caught: Police

Fraudster ripped-off $1.2 million, maybe more

Miami-Dade Police say an art thief bilked collectors out of over $1.2 million, and there may be more victims.

Jorge Gonzalez, 49, was arrested on Nov. 8 on four counts of grand theft after a series of rip-offs, police said.

According to police, Gonzalez would sell fraudulent paintings from well-known artists or use them as collateral for borrowed money.

On other occasions, Gonzalez met with victims to buy original paintings, but would swipe the works and flee without paying, police said.

Gonzalez remained behind bars Monday. It was unknown whether he has an attorney.

Investigators believe there are more victims and that Gonzalez may have stolen over $5 million worth of goods.

Anyone who may have been victimized by Gonzalez is asked to call Miami-Dade CrimeStoppers at 305-471-TIPS.
