Mystery Smell Leads to Apartment Evacuation

Authorities evacuate apartments in North Miami odor scare

Police and firemen evacuated several apartments in North Miami Monday night after they discovered an apartment filled with a mysterious smell and possibly threatening notes, authorities said.

A hazmat team encountered a strong odor of gas when they entered the fourth-floor apartment at 1475 Northeast 125th Terrace around 8 p.m.

The smell, noticeable from outside the apartment, was coming from containers filled with an unknown chemical, authorities said.

Responders also discovered a bedroom door covered with notes in English, Spanish, and Creole. The responders evacuated 14 nearby apartments and called in a bomb squad to investigate.

The team was able to determine that the chemicals were not explosive. The incident was still being investigated late Monday. Authorities didn't say what the notes contained.
