New Father Shot, Killed During Infant's Homecoming

Officials in Panama City say a new father is dead after a neighbor accidentally fired a gun into the family's home during a gathering to celebrate the infant's homecoming.
 
The News Herald of Panama City reports that 33-year-old Steven Justin Ayers died Tuesday night after the stray bullet struck his head.
 
According to arrest reports, Ayers' neighbor was on his porch and picked up a loaded 9mm pistol. The neighbor told authorities that he accidentally discharged the pistol. The man was arrested and charged with manslaughter and with being felon in possession of a firearm. He had a previous felony conviction for carrying a concealed firearm.
 
Ayers was a musician who played venues throughout the Panhandle. He also taught guitar lessons.
