North Florida County Removes Confederate Flag

A Confederate flag flying in front of a north Florida county building has been removed after local officials decided to take it down.

Marion County spokeswoman Barbra Hernandez says the county respects its history but also understands the perceptions some citizens have of flying the banner in front of an official building.

The Ocala Star-Banner reports the flag was removed last week from in front of the McPherson Governmental Complex.

The county joined other Southern communities who have removed or were considering removing the flag after the June 17 slayings of nine black people by a white man at a Charleston, South Carolina, church.
