Two people were in custody Friday after an incident that started with what police believed was a stolen car and ended with a shot fired and a police dog taking down one of the men.
The incident happened near the intersection of 24th Avenue and 135th Street Friday morning. Police initially stopped the duo in an apparently stolen car. The two quickly jumped out of the car, but one was caught and arrested almost immediately.
The second was hiding as helicopters flew over the neighborhood. A single shot was fired as the police tried to track down the suspect. Police fired the shot after feeling threatened by a neighborhood dog. The officer missed the dog.
The second suspect then stumbled out of hiding as a Miami-Dade Police dog left him limping.
“Two bad guys off the street. People get their car back and we move on,” said David Chiverton.
Local residents wouldn’t talk to the media on the record, but said there are lots of youngsters in the area with nothing to do. Opa-locka officials said they are gaining ground on the city’s crime problem.
Police haven't released the identity of the two suspects and haven't said what charges they may face.
