Flowers for Daniel Fundora sat outside Quality Meats in Opa-locka Wednesday, after he was shot to death there Tuesday night. Opa-locka Police spokesman Julio Padron and a Quality Meats employee named Alex spoke about the case.
One man was killed and another left in critical condition after they were shot during an attempted robbery outside the Opa-locka business Quality Meats late Tuesday, police said.
The shooting happened around 8 p.m. in a shopping center in the area of 140th Street and Northwest 27th Avenue, Opa-locka Police spokesman Julio Padron said.
"It appears that the robbery might have gone awry at which time both victims were shot," he said.
Padron said the victims, who are in their 20s, were visiting family members who own a couple stores in the shopping center when they decided to go to a nearby supermarket. They were ambushed by the suspect, who attempted to rob them, before the shooting occurred, Padron said.
One man, identified by his family as Daniel Fundora, died on the sidewalk outside Quality Meats. Flowers marked the spot Wednesday.
His cousin was rushed to Jackson Memorial Hospital, where he was in critical condition, Padron said.
Both of the victims' parents were steps away when the incident happened.
Police believe the suspect was targeting pieces of jewelry one of the victims was wearing.
The suspect is described as a black male, between 5 feet 8 inches and 5 feet 11 inches tall, with a medium build and a low fade haircut.
Padron said police are looking for the suspect and a reward is being offered in the case.
"We need the public's help in solving such a heinous crime," he said.
Anyone with information is asked to call Miami-Dade Crime Stoppers at 305-471-TIPS.
