The city manager of Opa-locka, who took a leave of absence after the FBI began a probe into potential corruption, has turned in his formal resignation.
David Chiverton, 51, will step down from his post effective Monday. He told the Miami Herald he was leaving for personal reasons, but would not elaborate.
Chiverton is one of several senior officials from the city who have been under investigation from the federal government for allegedly taking thousands in cash payments from people looking to obtain operating permits and water connections.
He is also alleged to have paid himself nearly $40,000, something that came out before taking the leave. At the time, Chiverton said he was stepping away for “medical reasons”.
The city commission voted 3-2 not to accept the resignation at a meeting Wednesday night, but that will not likely have any impact. Chiverton was hired as an assistant city manager four years ago before being promoted.
The city is currently dealing with a debt crisis, as they are in the red by $8 million. Governor Rick Scott placed Opa-locka under control of an oversight board early in June.
