Man Struck, Killed By Train in Miami: MFR

Miami Fire Rescue responded to an incident involving a pedestrian being struck by a train Tuesday evening.

It happened just before 8 p.m. near Northwest 7th Avenue and 73rd Street.

Authorities confirmed the 51-year-old male pedestrian died from his injuries. His name has not been released.

"The next phase of the investigation is to find out why he was on the tracks. Could this have been avoided? Was this person aware of the train coming?" said Capt. Ignatius Carroll with MFR.

The 94-car train blocked traffic along Northwest 7th Avenue, Northwest 17th Avenue and Northwest 22nd Avenue near 73rd Street for hours. Drivers had to find a way around.

The mile-long road block, caused by the Florida East Coast Train, stretched through the northern tip of Miami.

"They stress the importance of not being on the tracks. This is for trains traveling, it's not an area for pedestrians to be walking. That's why there are posted signs," Capt. Carroll said. "You may have people intoxicated and trying to take a shortcut and you can see the results can be deadly."

Investigators interviewed the train operators and tried to identify the victim, who they said was carrying food.
