Gunman Turns Himself In After Deadly Shooting at Pembroke Pines Gas Station: Police

A gunman who shot and killed a gas station employee in Pembroke Pines Saturday afternoon turned himself in to authorities. He now faces charges of first-degree murder.

Pembroke Pines Police responded to the Chevron gas station at 1601 N University Drive just before 4 p.m. after witnesses reported hearing multiple gunshots.

Police said 28-year-old Steven Dawson of Pembroke Pines and 25-year-old Darrel Joshua Baker, an employee of the car wash at the gas station, got in an argument. According to police, Dawson chased Baker through the gas station, and shot him after he tried to hide in a black Mercedes Benz that had just been dropped off for a wash.

"The suspect shot the victim multiple times, striking him twice in the back," said Pembroke Pines Police Captain Al Xiques. "The victim was targeted in this case. It was not a random act of violence."

Baker was transported to Memorial Regional Hospital in Pembroke Pines, where he died while in surgery.

Police have not said what started the altercation, but believe it started as a domestic dispute.

Dawson turned himself in Saturday night after local media broadcasted his picture. He is being held without bond. It is unclear if Dawson has an attorney.
