Search Continues for Killer of FIU Student

Police remained on the hunt for a killer Monday just days after a Florida International University student was found shot to death at an apartment complex parking garage in Sweetwater.

FIU student Michael Zaldua was shot in the head twice Friday at the 4th Street Commons parking garage on Southwest 4th Street, about four blocks away from FIU's Modesto A. Madique Campus.

"It's just scary to see that someone can easily get shot. I go to the same school as he," neighbor and student Alexis Agusto said.

The 21-year-old Zaldua was killed on the 3rd floor parking area and detectives found a lot of cash in the victim's car, officials said.

Many students live at the complex. The building's management has alerted residents and are upping security measures.

"This is my first year living here and to hear that there was a shooting at my apartment building, that makes me feel petrified," said Monica Howard.

Agusto said he'll be walking his dog earlier.

"I have to take him out at an earlier time if anything, you know," Agusto said. "Hopefully there's more precautionary measures from now on."

FIU officials assured students about their safety saying in part "Although there is nothing to indicate there is any danger to our FIU community, this incident serves as a reminder to be vigilant of you surroundings and report any unusual activity to police."
