The Palm Beach County Sheriff's Office is set to pay out more than $1 million to settle two federal lawsuits related to deputy-involved shootings.
The Palm Beach Post reported Tuesday that the sheriff's office will pay $562,500 to the family of Matthew Pollow and $450,000 to the guardianship of Jeremy Hutton.
Records show a deputy fatally shot Pollow in April 2014 when the mentally ill 28-year-old came after the deputy with a screwdriver. Hutton, who suffers from Down syndrome, was 17 years old in 2010 when a deputy shot him.
The sheriff's office still faces several lawsuits over shootings. Currently being heard in Fort Lauderdale federal court is a case involving Dontrell Stephens, an unarmed black man who was shot and paralyzed by a deputy.
