A stolen car suspect lead police on a wild chase through the streets and canals of Miami-Dade Wednesday, crashing a car and pathetically trying to swim away from cops.

Officers were trying to pull the suspect over as he was driving a reported stolen car Wednesday morning when the driver took off and crashed the car into a fence in the 8300 block of Southwest 12th Terrace.

Rather than give up, the suspect ran into a nearby canal and tried to swim his way to freedom. After a futile swim, the suspect finally gave up and was taken into custody, police said.

He was treated for minor injuries at the scene.

At least the suspect can say he fared better than burglary suspect Dauntrae Sturrup, whose body was found floating in a canal at Weston Hills Country Club by a golfer earlier this week.

Police say Sturrup was part of a group of men who tried to burglarize a home near the course last week. Sturrup is believed to have drowned in the canal while trying to make his escape.
